Five on Friday: Autumn Delights

1. As I write, the rain drips trickles through the gutters. It's been dark and wet most of the day. Not much wind, but it's beginning to pick up a little. A candle burns (for atmosphere) and the gas fireplace has been on and off (automatic thermostat) several times.

Autumn is well and truly here. The golden leaves of the Garry Oak tree show one side of this changeable season; today's views show another. A bit moody, autumn is.

2. On a recent walk we spied this fat bunny. She was a little skittish and scampered over to the blackberry bushes in case she needed to make a fast getaway. I've never seen such a large bunny with such a thick coat of fur. The black outline of her ears is striking - is it natural, or did she use some mascara?

3. Our fair city with a bank of fog over the Strait beyond. In the foreground is Swan Lake Nature Preserve, shining in the sunlight. There's a height restriction for building, and I'm glad of it - who wants to block out the view with skyscrapers?

4. Late summer I picked up some fabric remnants to make new cushions for the living room. Finally, they are finished. I've piled them all onto the couch, but some belong on the love seat, as well. It's a good feeling to finish a project, even one as simple as these cushions.

Some people don't like or use cushions on their couches, but I find that most seating is too deep and I slouch or else can't touch the floor with my feet. I like a squashy cushion that I can place behind my back. They're also great for those times when I just can't keep my eyes open and I softly collapse for a nap.

5. This evening I baked a Pear Upside-Down Cake using a recipe from Canadian Living. You can find it by clicking on the link. It's too dark for a proper photo. The cake tastes delicious - I had a piece straight out of the oven.

And I'll sneak in one more - I collected a few leaves on a recent walk and stacked them into a vase. The textures and autumnal shades appeal to me, and nothing could be simpler.

  5. Beautiful Autumn pictures and those lovely cushions look perfect for cosying into as the nights draw in. That is one chubby bunny! Does the think coat indicate a very cold winter I wonder?

Autumn is well and truly upon us in France too, it arrived with a bang and suddenly it was cold and we were lighting the fire! It's definitely a time to think about baking and making the house cosy, your cushions are beautiful and the pear upside down cake sounds delicious, already I am hungry!

  9. Super autumnal photos. I love the look of the pear upside down cake (I make a pineapple variety) and I'll be stealing your great idea of displaying fallen leaves in glass vases.

  14. Lorrie- What great photos and a fun view of life through your lenses. That is a gorgeous view. We have height restrictions in our city for buildings, too. A pear cake, huh? Don't think I have ever had one. Sounds delicious though.

Isn't it great to get those small projects done? Love your pillows. I just cut down some pillow cases from king size to standard...don't know why I didn't do it years ago. xo Diana

  15. I'm a cushion girl too. You can never have too many. What a fat bunny. I had to look twice I thought he was a stone one at first. Love the look of the pear cake. Enjoy your weekend. B x

  16. I do hope you are all ok with the nasty weather predicted for the island and southern BC. It sounds quite nasty. Your Garry Oak leaves are a beautiful colour. I think your new cushions are pretty. I also like a cushion on the couch for the same reasons as you. I hope you have a cozy weekend.

  17. So pretty for autumn, we're still the tail-end of summer with highs in the low 80's. Quite a furry bunny. Love pillows on the couch, can never have too many.

  20. A truly delightful post! Glad to hear you aren't getting much from the storms either, all we got was a lot of rain, but thankfully no wind, which is always the worst. Your fat bunny is so cute, I wonder if it is wild, or one that got away? And what a great idea to stuff the leaves inside a jar... I am going to borrow your idea and safe my little maple tree's leaves which got blown off last night in the storm. Have a lovely and cozy weekend :)

  21. You have shared such a lovely variety in your post! I love the leaves & your new cushions & the pear dessert must be divine!
    Enjoy your weekend!

  22. The bunny has unusual colouring, different to the wild ones in our backyard. I've always liked a cushion behind my back when sitting on a sofa, sometimes a chair.
Great idea with the leaves, a simple way to enjoy their beauty.

  23. Your bunny has a different coloring than the ones that we have around here..more grayish...interesting!

What a fun, varied post...love the idea of collecting the leaves and displaying them this way!

And your cushion covers are gorgeous...that is quite a bit of major work right there!

  24. Oh that fat bunny is adorable. I have a soft spot for bunnies. And blackberries? Sounds like a Beatrix Potter story. Great job on the cushions, Lorrie. It is looking very fall-ish in your neck of the woods. I always say September is my favorite, but this year October has been even better. Blessings, Deborah

  25. The cake just looks so yummy. Love the Autumn colors and leaves. What a sweet bunny. Yesterday I went outside and a squirrel didn't see me coming until I was very close. He just froze like a statue hoping I wouldn't see him, then when I did he was too afraid to move. The cushion colors just say Lorrie. Very nice. We have just chairs and a love seat, but I still love a few cushions in the seats.

  26. Lovely autumn scenes - I love mascara bunny. Our wind and rain have been off and on all day - when they are on they are really ON - I hear more is coming - I'll throw a leaf in the air when the big winds start and it can fly up across the border to you.

  27. Lovely! I really like your leaves in the glass cylinders in your last photo!

  30. Beautiful Autumn post. Love how you "stuffed" the lovely Autumn leaves into the glass containers.... Looks like a fat and happy bunny. I have to have something behind my back. I'm short and never fit on a chair and sofas are even worse. UGH. Bring on the cushions! Happy Weekend!

  31. Lorrie, I always love checking in here and seeing your beautiful photos and writing. I have read back a bit and loved the posts from the Cotswolds, too. The Abbey, the castle ruins, and those horned cattle! You are so right about the simplicity and beauty of fall leaves and I love how you have displayed them in the glass containers. Beauty doesn't have to be complicated! I am so glad to find you here still blogging and sharing the beauty you find in your world.

    Blessings,
    Christi

Yes, cushions can be very helpful. I think I can really enjoy a pear upside down cake!!

  34. I love the leaves in the vase. "Oak leaves" has been added to today's to do list. I'm not sure they've started to change colors yet but I'm going to check on them. The maple and aspen leaves are in full color so I'll bring in a few of those, too. So glad you shared this!

  35. Your cushions are lovely. I'm a huge fan of them and I'm always propped up on all sides by them. Your colours are far more co-ordinated than mine though!

  36. As soon as I saw the bunny, I wondered if it had been somebody's pet that had been released into the wild. He's beautiful, I love the dark markings. I know what you mean about the cushions, you definitely need them on today's sofas. I use one myself. I love how you decorated with the fall leaves, what a great idea!
